Pocket mask or face shield

Laerdal Pocket Mask is the pocket mask with a one-way valve, intended for mouth-to-mask ventilation. It is shaped to fit the face and lets you keep the airway open with both hands on the jaw. The mask comes in a case and is the solution that belongs in the emergency bag, in the car and at the workplace CPR station.

Laerdal Face Shield is the flat single-use shield. It takes up almost no space at all and can be carried in a pocket, a bag or a belt pouch — the point is that it is actually there when something happens. It is discarded after use.

The difference in practice: the pocket mask gives a better seal and is easier to ventilate with, while the face shield is always with you. Many people therefore have both — the mask where the equipment is kept, the shield on their person.

Things to keep in mind

Check regularly that the mask is still in its case and that the valve is undamaged, and replace the face shield after each use. The rubber cushion around the mask should be soft and smooth — if it has become brittle or deformed, it no longer seals against the face.

A barrier device that is locked away helps no one. Place the mask where someone can actually reach it within seconds, ideally next to the defibrillator or in the outer compartment of the emergency bag, and keep the face shield in the pocket of your work clothes. If the organisation has several floors or buildings, more than one is needed.

What is the difference between a pocket mask and a face shield?

The pocket mask has a shaped mask with a one-way valve that seals against the face, so you can keep the airway open with both hands and ventilate more effectively. The face shield is a flat single-use shield that weighs almost nothing and can always be carried with you. The mask gives better ventilation, the shield better availability.

Can the pocket mask be used more than once?

The mask itself is intended to be cleaned and reused according to Laerdal's instructions, while the one-way valve with filter is a single-use part that is replaced after use. Check the mask when you put it back in its case: a brittle or deformed cushion does not seal, and then the whole point of a pocket mask is lost.

Do you need a barrier device to give CPR?

Chest compressions should be started immediately whether or not a barrier is at hand, and compressions are what matter most. The barrier device is there for the rescue breaths, for those who are trained and prepared to give them — and so that more people actually dare to do so on a stranger.
